Amrita Pritam

Amrita Pritam
This blog explores the poetry of Amrita Pritam. All her original poems are in Punjabi. I've translated them in Hindi. The Hindi translations are relatively straight forward and there are other authors who have translated her work in Hindi. In some cases, where I could, I have translated a few of her poems in English. This is an entirely different task from Hindi translation. I have major reservations and a few misgivings about any attempt to translate poems in general. All of those concerns apply here in full force. I consider these translations as my musings and explorations: they carry no weight and are no substitute for experiencing the poetry in Punjabi. I am acutely aware of the challenges this may pose to even Hindi readers, let alone English ones. I offer no recourse.

रौशनी Light ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ

A poem about a lover pining for her beloved during one lonely night. Each stanza touches on a different sensory experience [sight, touch, smell and taste] and turns on a different metaphor.

When I visited Amrita at her house, I noticed the last stanza of this poem was hand painted on a large lampshade in her drawing room. Presumably, this was done by Imroz, her lover, who also illustrated all her books and was a well known painter. I imagined these words casting a shadow on the walls of the room: "rall gayee see is wich ik boond tere ishq dee.."

Light

The night of separation
          has lit up a bit
The wick of memory
          has lengthened it

My heart:
a pain has stayed in it
All night, I counted off
          the stars with it

The sun disappeared
          from my sight
But in the Moon
its fragrance, still lingers in it

For a drop of your love
          had dissolved in it
That's how I could drink
the bitters of life, a bit

raushanee

hijr kee is raat mein

phir battee yaad kee

nazar ke asamaan se
chala gaya hai sooraj kaheen
par chaand mein hai usakee
khushaboo abhee aa rahee

ghul gayee thee isamen
ek boond tere ishk kee
is lie main umr kee
saaree kadavaahat pee gayee
