Amrita Pritam

Amrita Pritam
This blog explores the poetry of Amrita Pritam. All her original poems are in Punjabi. I've translated them in Hindi. The Hindi translations are relatively straight forward and there are other authors who have translated her work in Hindi. In some cases, where I could, I have translated a few of her poems in English. This is an entirely different task from Hindi translation. I have major reservations and a few misgivings about any attempt to translate poems in general. All of those concerns apply here in full force. I consider these translations as my musings and explorations: they carry no weight and are no substitute for experiencing the poetry in Punjabi. I am acutely aware of the challenges this may pose to even Hindi readers, let alone English ones. I offer no recourse.

चांदनी की फुलकारी A Shawl of Moonbeams ਚਾਨਣ ਦੀ ਫੁਲਕਾਰੀ

"Phulkari" is a traditional Punjabi shawl, hand embroidered in silk mostly by women, with floral and geometric patterns. The shawl is worn at marriages, festivals and joyous occasions. Stitching a shawl is a laborious task, often taking months to complete by a single woman.

Amrita uses this labor as a metaphor in this poem to show labor of spiritual love.

A Shawl of Moonbeams

Who shall stitch for me
          a shawl of moon beams!

I can reach the alcove of sky
          to light the sun
but the terrace of mind is too high
          who shall light its lamp!

With the stars of Milky Way

I would have filled my cup
but from the river of pain
          who would want a drop!

The spark you left in my charge
          has now singed

          the sleeve of my heart
          who shall bear the flames!

You thought you had said
          all you had to say
but I still hear a sigh
          that speaks of your way!

Who shall stitch for me
          a shawl of moon beams!
