Amrita Pritam

Amrita Pritam
This blog explores the poetry of Amrita Pritam. All her original poems are in Punjabi. I've translated them in Hindi. The Hindi translations are relatively straight forward and there are other authors who have translated her work in Hindi. In some cases, where I could, I have translated a few of her poems in English. This is an entirely different task from Hindi translation. I have major reservations and a few misgivings about any attempt to translate poems in general. All of those concerns apply here in full force. I consider these translations as my musings and explorations: they carry no weight and are no substitute for experiencing the poetry in Punjabi. I am acutely aware of the challenges this may pose to even Hindi readers, let alone English ones. I offer no recourse.

रब जी ! Savior ਰੱਬ ਜੀ !

Amrita uses as metaphor the ancient Sufi and Hindu tradition in India of tying threads or pieces of cloth to trees to make a wish [mannat].  Usually, people ask their pirs, gods or spiritual leaders to fulfill their wishes. Once their wish is fulfilled, people return to untie the threads.

Here Amrita reverses the order by having her god ask of her an unspoken wish. She fulfills god's wish through the words she writes and endures the persecution by others for her words - without regret. She remains true until her last word, and poignantly asks her god to come see how she has fulfilled the wish asked of her.

This sacred reverence for the written word ["akhar"] shows up in several other poems of Amrita. In fact, her poem "Akhar" [Words] is the most autobiographical poem where she develops this idea fully.

Savior

Once You came to my tree
          to make a wish
You tore a ribbon
          from your bodice
and tied it to a twig

I took every drop of my blood
          and wrote words with it
But every word I wrote
          the world nailed it
          to a crucifix

Yet I kept the dignity
          of my life
Never shedding
          a single tear
          from my eyes

You, come back to my tree
          untie the knot
Set the ribbon free
          and rest in your lap
          my last word

See! that wish
          you made of me
          I fulfilled it
Once You came to my tree
          to make a wish

rab jee ! toone mere ped pe aake
ek din mannat maangee
